Soccer today: The Riyad Effect

Riyad Mahrez has been named the PFA player of the year for the 2015/16 Backlays Premier League season beating team mates Jamie Verdy and N’Golo Kante to the coveted prize.

The 25 year old Algerian has been a vital gear to Leicester’s season with his 17 goals and 11 assists, netting his 17th goal in the 4.0 thumping of Swansea on sunday.

Mahrez becomes the first leicester player to win the award and also the first african player to win the PFA award, he also became the first winner of the PFA not to have played for Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester UTD, Arsenal and Newcastle.

Leicester City who are currently 8 points clear at the top of the table with just three games left are clear favourites to win the BPL.

Morealso, Tottenham midfielder, Dele Alli was names young player of the year, while Jamie Verdy and Ryan Giggs received goal scoring and merit awards respectively.
